What ya'll think? Perhaps to make some points for each direction:
Benefits of members only - closer community, more free to post things that might be work-in-progress and not ready to general public attention, perhaps easier to share secret deals like ebay listings, etc, and much less issues with possible spam/bots/anonymouses lurkers
Benefits of open forum - more traction among users, more said users, more accessible information and knowledge from forum.
There is still possibility to have "private" threads either way, but that's to be figured out later.
Maybe it works in reverse of making private threads. Make some threads public? Use the private to do bat cave work and then when it appears worth publishing it goes to Xdevs library or the thread becomes public?
In general it should be readable even by non registered people, so that knowledge and expertise are shared.
Only for very special/sensitive topics there should be option for only members.
This engine is somewhat basic, so there are no tools to make group permissions or change threads type from private to public or other way around.
I'm not a web-programmer to dig deep into the code or doctor databases. So there are certain limitations.

I'm just tossing ideas out.
